Enter Ambrose Godfrey. In 1723, this German chemist invented the first fire extinguisher. It was a barrel filled with a chemical solution and a pewter chamber of gunpowder. When ignited, the gunpowder would explode, dispersing the chemical solution to douse the flames. While rudimentary, it was an improvement over using buckets and blankets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1866, Francois Carlier took Godfrey’s design and improved it by using bicarbonate of soda solution instead of plain water. In 1924, Walter Kidde Company invented the first modern fire extinguisher with a cartridge-operated mechanism. Today, we’re lucky to have access to highly advanced fire extinguishers that use various chemicals and technology to put out fires quickly and efficiently.
